Day 07: Khe Sanh – Aluoi
Khe Sanh is a strategic and important location, and the US military has made a bold move by establishing a besieged position there. Their goal is two-fold: to prevent the North from sending the People's Liberation Army Vietnam to the South and to cut off the Ho Chi Minh trail. It's a daring plan, but it could pay off big time! Khe Sanh is situated in a stunning red ground valley, with an impressive elevation of over 400 metres! In 1965-1966, the US Army and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam transformed Khe Sanh into the largest and most impressive base defenses in line 9. This is one of three incredible "magic eye" (Khe Sanh, Lang Vay and Ta Con) of the McNamara Line! Khe Sanh saw some of the biggest and most exciting battles of the Route 9 - Khe Sanh 1968 campaign and the Route 9 - Southern Laos campaign in 1971!
Khe Sanh is a place that has been mentioned in several songs about Vietnam, and it even has its own song! The title of the song is about the bitterness that Australian troops had suffered in the military zone. It was written by the rock band Cold Chisel, who had very few soldiers in this country during their time in Vietnam. In a rousing speech at the inauguration on 20/01/2009, President Obama also mentioned Khe Sanh as an act of honour to the Americans who sacrificed so much for their country.

Day 09: Hue Back Road
Your adventure begins in Hue, where you'll hop back in the saddle to explore the former imperial capital of Vietnam. Hue is a treasure trove of Vietnam's royal past, and a fascinating blend of vibrant streets and serene settings. Today is going to be an amazing day! You'll be riding approximately 25 kilometres through the fields to visit many of Hue's remarkable sites, including temples, bunkers, tombs, ruins, pagodas and spectacular scenery. On your cycling adventure, you'll have the incredible opportunity to explore the Imperial Citadel and its magnificent Forbidden Purple City. The latter was almost totally destroyed during the Vietnam War's Tet Offensive, but the foliage-covered ruins are still atmospheric and the gaping holes left by bombs give an idea of the destruction wreaked upon the country during the war – it's truly awe-inspiring! The itinerary is flexible, so you can fit in as many stops as you like to admire the sites! Later, relax in a café or restaurant. Hue's cuisine is considered by many Vietnamese people to be the best in the country! It's influenced by Hue's imperial heritage (small dishes and a focus on aesthetic presentation) as well as its strong Buddhist heritage, reflected in the high proportion of vegetarian restaurants in the region. The Dong Ba Market is a real feast for the senses, with an amazing array of goods and foods to see and snack on! You'll love trying some of the local specialities that graced the Nguyen emperors' banquet tables! One of my favourites is the 'banh khoai', Hue's answer to the pancake.
