Itinerary
Cycling in northern Vietnam is an absolutely amazing way to immerse yourself in the region's breathtaking landscapes and rich culture. The northern part of Vietnam is absolutely amazing for cycling! It's got rolling hills and rugged mountain ranges that offer both challenging and scenic routes.
You'll absolutely love our 14-day Epic Bicycle tours in Northern Vietnam – they're some of the most amazing in South East Asia! Every day is a new adventure! We'll be climbing and descending the various altitudes of the Ha Giang Plateau, Bao Lac and Cao Bang Geopark, so you'll get to experience a different terrain, gradient, vista and climate each day. This is a ride you'll never forget! Even if the memory of burning leg muscles doesn't stick with you, your amazing photos will definitely do the trick.
Our Northern Vietnam Bicycle tours will kick off in Ha Giang, the final frontier province of northern Vietnam. It's renowned for its amazing landscape of limestone pinnacles and granite outcrops, and some of the most spectacular scenery in the country! Then, we'll head from Yen Minh to Dong Van, and then across the Mai Pi Leng Pass to Meo Vac – it's quite mind-blowing!
As we cycle along Happiness Road, we get to explore some amazing places, including the Dong Van Plateau, the Khau Vai Love Market, the Quan Ba Sky Gate and some really beautiful, winding passes. Down in the valley, hidden away in the clouds, you'll find some lovely little villages full of friendly H'mong people.
The amazing Bao Lac route connecting Ha Giang and Cao Bang is absolutely stunning and well worth the challenge!
Cao Bang is a truly special place, located in the northeast of Vietnam. It's home to some of the most incredible natural beauty in the world, including the magnificent Ban Gioc waterfall, a range of stunning limestone mountains, and colourful ethnic minority villages. The vibrant traditional culture of the ethnic minority is also a highlight.
We'll also be cycling to Ba Be Lake, which is Vietnam's largest natural lake. It's home to Ba Be Lake, the country's largest national park, which is a real treat for the senses with its beautiful limestone and tropical forest.
The lake is nestled in a gorgeous setting, surrounded by rolling hills and lush forests. It's a breathtaking sight to behold! At 7km long, up to 30m deep, and a kilometre wide in parts, it's a true natural wonder. And if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of some islands dotting its surface.
As you embark on a cycling adventure on the tarmac road through the serene countryside of Bac Can to Thai Nguyen, you'll be treated to some truly magical moments. You'll get to soak in the beauty of nature at its finest, admiring the pristine landscapes and taking in the incredible views of the limestone mountains. It's a journey you'll never forget!
Day 1: Hanoi Arrival Transferring to – Ha Giang Cycling Loop
Vietnam's absolutely gorgeous and peaceful capital is nestled right in the heart of the northern Red River Delta. Hanoi is a city of lakes and leafy boulevards that still has that lovely French colonial elegance. Hanoi is known as the 'Paris of the East' thanks to its delicious coffee and perfect baguettes, but the city has a rich history dating back to 1010 AD.
When you arrive in Hanoi, we'll be waiting to greet you and take you to Ha Giang city for a four-hour trip. You'll get to explore and enjoy the absolutely gorgeous, pristine nature of northern Vietnam. We'll have lunch in a lovely local restaurant.
Once we've had a chance to recharge our batteries, we'll fix our bikes and set off on a lovely, scenic road along the Gam River, heading upward to Ha Giang city. We'll be blown away by the incredible scenery and the charming, rustic way of life in Northern Vietnam.
And then, our lovely trip continues on a beautiful village road, which will take us closer to Ha Giang city. We'll challenge you with a few short passes before descending into the city for an overnight stay.

Day 03: Yen Minh Bike Tour Mau Due – Lung Phin - Dong Van
What a wonderful day it is for us as we cycle through the heart of the incredible Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark! We've taken a little detour onto a minor road that takes us on a gentle, rolling road before descending into the bottom of the valley. Here we get to ride through some tiny hill-tribe communities, which is really special. Eventually, we reach a bustling village market where we see a dazzling array of brightly-costumed villagers trading everything from piglets to bamboo shoots and forest fodder.
After following a river for a little while, we come across the ruins of an old defensive wall. It's hard to tell exactly how old it is, but it's definitely a fascinating sight! After that, we start to climb. It's great to have a similar gradient to the day before as a warm-up before the main climb after lunch. As we enter the Ha Giang Plateau, the scenery is already pretty impressive, but it's nothing short of mind-blowing! At each stage, you find yourself wondering how on earth you can possibly continue to climb when you've already climbed so much, but it just goes on and on with an amazing variety of scenery. And you'll be able to sleep like a baby, safe in the knowledge that you've just conquered the epic Ha Giang Plateau climb!
