Next, we’ll enjoy a thrilling 1000-meter descent into Xin Man, a hidden gem nestled in the dramatic mountains and forests along the Vietnam-China border. Xin Man is home to 15 diverse ethnic groups, including the Nung, Flower H'mong, Tay, La Chi, Kinh, and Hoa, offering a unique opportunity to experience their rich cultures and traditions. In the afternoon, we’ll descend through picturesque villages and lush rice and maize terraces cultivated by the Red Dao and Tay tribes. The air is filled with the aromatic scents of cardamom and star anise, as we cycle towards Tan Quang, nestled deep in the valley. For the final leg of this long cycling day, we’ll take a more leisurely pace, cycling 46 km along the peaceful Lo River, surrounded by unspoiled countryside. Our journey will conclude in Ha Giang, the sleepy capital of Ha Giang Province, located approximately 215 miles (350 km) northwest of Hanoi. This is part of the historic Old Silk Road, rich in culture and natural wonders.

As we continue, we’ll ride through traditional minority villages, immersing ourselves in the vibrant culture of Northern Vietnam’s hill tribes. The next 25 km will take us up winding roads into the vast limestone mountain range, where perpendicular rock walls rise dramatically from the landscape. We’ll climb 800 meters toward the Heaven Gate 1 mountain pass, where we’ll be greeted by friendly locals as we pass through mountain villages often shrouded in mist.
At the summit, we’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views, including the famous Tam Son Valley and the iconic Twin Hills, with Quan Ba Town visible below. We’ll stop for lunch at the summit, soaking in the stunning scenery before continuing our journey.After lunch, we’ll begin our descent towards the Gam River, riding along its peaceful banks until we encounter another pass. We start gently with a 2 km warm-up on relatively flat terrain before tackling the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, often considered the most awe-inspiring mountain road in Vietnam. This jaw-dropping pass, connecting Dong Van and Meo Vac, snakes along sheer cliffs with jaw-dropping views of the emerald Nho Que River far below.
We ascend gradually for around 7 km, navigating winding switchbacks and sharp turns until we reach the summit—an elevation that rewards us with panoramic vistas of deep gorges, limestone pinnacles, and mist-draped valleys. A thrilling 16 km descent follows, zigzagging down to Meo Vac, a picturesque town nestled in a valley of towering rock spires. The ride continues through a series of undulating hills and remote mountain passes, including the rugged M Pass, bringing us to Mau Due Valley where a well-deserved lunch awaits.
