Day 01: Hanoi - Thai Nguyen – Ba Be lake
After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we kick off our 12-day mountain bike tour in North Vietnam, leaving behind the bustling streets of Hanoi for a scenic two-hour transfer on the newly built highway to Thai Nguyen. Upon arrival at our cycling starting point, we gear up for an exhilarating ride along a smooth tarmac road, leading us deep into the ATK safety zones, a historic Viet Minh revolutionary base. This route offers a unique opportunity to pedal through peaceful villages, interact with local communities, and witness the stunning landscapes of Northern Vietnam. Along the way, we'll stop at a traditional paper-making village, providing a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage.
Next, we continue cycling toward Bac Kan, where a well-earned local lunch awaits. Day 03: Cycling Tour from Bac Me to Bao Lac via Bao Lam

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we hop on our bikes and set off along National Road 34A, a scenic route that follows the Gam River’s serene waters for 23 km. Cycling along this historic road, we’ll ride past rugged limestone mountains, lush valleys, and traditional villages, where locals continue to live as they have for generations. The journey to Ly Bon includes a relatively gentle uphill climb, followed by an exhilarating descent and a 30 km stretch of smooth, flat terrain, perfect for soaking in the picturesque views. Along the way, we’ll pass by colorfully dressed ethnic communities, such as the Tay, Nung, and H’mong people, offering us a glimpse into their rich cultural traditions. Today’s journey takes us along a single-track trail, offering a thrilling ride through unspoiled landscapes. A major highlight of the day is crossing the Nho Que River on a traditional bamboo raft, a truly unique experience connecting Bao Lac and Meo Vac. Since our support vehicle won’t be able to follow us, riders must be fully prepared to take on this self-supported cycling challenge. To maintain energy levels, we highly recommend carrying energy bars and hydration drinks in your daypack.
After a refreshing lunch at a local restaurant, we continue our journey on a narrow and rugged road toward Coc Pang and Coc Pung villages, where we’ll witness the distinctive Hmong house architecture and experience the authentic daily life of the Hmong people. From here, the route intensifies as we navigate a steep hillside slope, leading us down to the bamboo ferry raft in Khau Vai.

Day 11: Bac Ha – Vinh Yen – Xuan Hoa
Start your day with a hearty breakfast at the hotel, fueling up for an incredible cycling journey through some of Vietnam’s most picturesque landscapes. As you wind your way through quaint villages and pass stunning rice paddy fields, you’ll make your way toward Nam Khanh Commune, ready for an exciting 20-kilometre (11-mile) ride.
Once we arrive in Nam Khanh, we’ll take a moment to regroup and recharge. Then, get ready for a short but steep hill climb with a winding route that will lead us to Tan Phuong Commune. Along the way, we’ll be treated to breathtaking scenery, including the majestic limestone mountain ranges, offering jaw-dropping views of the surrounding landscape. After this challenging ascent, we’ll descend into the rolling hills and arrive at Trung Do Commune.
It’s time for a well-deserved lunch break! After replenishing our energy, we’ll hop back on our bikes and ride along a flat tarmac road that will guide us to our second pass. Prepare for a challenging 5 km slope, but the descent afterward will reward us with more scenic vistas as we continue our ride toward Tan Duong Junction.
At the end of the day, we’ll head to Vinh Yen Commune for dinner and a well-earned overnight stay, reflecting on an exhilarating day of cycling through some of Vietnam’s most captivating landscapes.

Day 12: Vinh Yen – Luc Yen – Vu Linh Cycling Adventure
After a refreshing start at the ecolodge, we embark on a new day of exploration, cycling through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in northern Vietnam! Our journey begins on an asphalt road, leading to a junction where we’ll turn onto a secondary road that takes us deep into the dreamlike Lam Thuong Valley. Here, we’ll cycle through rugged villages, where the mountain ranges are often shrouded in mist, creating an awe-inspiring atmosphere.
As we cycle along, we’ll pass incredible farms, lush rice paddy fields, and local markets that are brimming with life and culture. One of the highlights of the day is a visit to the Luc Yen Gem Market, a unique gem market in Luc Yen District, known for its fascinating history and vibrant trade. This market is one of the biggest gemstone markets in northern Vietnam and is renowned for trading in precious gemstones. It’s open for just a few hours each morning, so we’ll make sure to get there early to experience this incredible market in full swing!
After soaking in the sights and sounds of the market, we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, refueling for the next leg of our adventure. After lunch, we’ll load our bikes onto the bus and transfer back to Hanoi, reflecting on a thrilling day of cycling and discovery in Luc Yen and the Lam Thuong Valley.
